How Peppermint Oil can Support your Wellbeing in Winter

Known for its invigorating aroma and powerful properties, Peppermint oil is a winter wellness staple that can be used in various ways to support health, enhance comfort, and uplift the spirit. In this blog, we will explore creative and effective ways to use Peppermint essential oil throughout the winter season.  At Absolute Aromas we have a choice of three gorgeous Peppermints – U.S. Peppermint essential oil which is derived from the mentha × piperita plant which is primarily grown in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, Idaho), where the climate and soil are ideal for high-quality Peppermint growth.  The dry, sunny conditions lead to a high menthol content and a sharp, more cooling effect than the UK version which is grown in cooler, damper climates in England.  The different environmental factors result in a slightly lower menthol content and a milder, more herbaceous aroma.  Our Organic Peppermint is also hugely popular as it is grown and distilled without any synthetic pesticides or processes.

Cold and flu season is at its peak during winter, leading to congestion, stuffy noses, and sinus discomfort. As we know, Peppermint essential oil contains menthol which is a naturally occurring organic compound known for its cooling, analgesic, and decongestant properties. Historical records indicate that Peppermint was used in Ancient Egypt as early as 1550 BCE, as referenced in the ‘Ebers Papyrus’, one of the oldest medical texts. The Greeks and Romans also valued Peppermint for its digestive and medicinal properties.  The process of distilling Peppermint essential oil likely became more refined during the Middle Ages and by the 18th century, it gained widespread recognition in Europe and North America for its therapeutic benefits, particularly for digestive issues and respiratory ailments.  Here are a few great ways its therapeutic properties can benefit our health today.

  • Steam Inhalation: Add a few drops of Peppermint essential oil to a bowl of hot water. Cover your head with a towel, lean over the bowl, and inhale deeply for several minutes. This can help naturally clear and leave you feeling refreshed.
  • Diffusion: Use an essential oil diffuser to disperse Peppermint oil into the air. This can help purify indoor air.
  • Chest Rub: Mix a few drops of Peppermint oil with a carrier oil like Coconut or Jojoba oil and massage onto the chest and back to promote easier breathing.

A common ailment at any time of year is a headache, either caused by a virus or sometimes by stress, anxiety or hormones.  Winter headaches can also be caused by dry indoor air, or seasonal sinus congestion. Peppermint oil has cooling properties that help relieve tension which can cause headaches.  A simple way to alleviate tense heads is to dilute a few drops of Peppermint oil with a carrier oil and apply it to the temples, forehead, and the back of the neck for a cooling effect that eases and soothes.  A cold compress can also be hugely relieving; soak a washcloth in cold water, add a drop of Peppermint oil, and apply it to your forehead to relieve discomfort.  Practise some slow deep breathing as you do this to promote a sense of calm and help you relax.  The naturally awakening properties of Peppermint can also help you feel less sluggish when you’re under the weather.  The darker, shorter days of winter can sometimes lead to this feeling of fatigue and sluggishness even when you’re not ill. Peppermint essential oil is known for its stimulating properties that enhance focus, mental clarity, and overall alertness.  Diffuse peppermint oil in the morning to help wake up your senses and start the day with clarity, or try mixing Peppermint oil with a carrier oil and store it in a roller bottle for on-the-go application to the wrists and temples.

Winter weather can contribute to stiffness and muscle discomfort, especially for those who experience joint pain or arthritis. Peppermint oil has long been used to provide relief for sore muscles and aching joints and is the perfect addition to a massage bland – just combine a few drops of Peppermint oil with a carrier oil and massage it onto sore areas to alleviate pain and improve circulation.  It can also be a great addition to your bath time routine, just add a few drops of Peppermint oil to plain, unscented Epsom salt and mix into a warm bath for muscle relaxation and relief.

Spending more time indoors during winter can lead to stale air and stuffiness and Peppermint oil’s crisp, minty scent helps freshen up indoor spaces while providing naturally occurring antibacterial effects.  Mix Peppermint essential oil with water and a splash of witch hazel in a spray bottle. Spritz around the home to eliminate odours and invigorate the air.  Mice and insects often seek shelter indoors during winter months and the strong scent of Peppermint oil acts as a natural repellent for common household pests.  Soak cotton balls with a few drops of Peppermint oil and place them in entry points, cupboards, and near windows to deter them.
