Aromatherapy uses all-natural essential oils to improve the health of the body, mind and spirit. It can help to improve both physical and emotional health.
Extracted from plants, essential oils are 100% concentrated and can smell extremely strong. These can be extracted from many different aspects of the plant – from flowers, leaves, twigs and branches, seeds, fruit, cones, bark, wood, root and even resin.
It is believed that essential oils present in plants act as a protection against harmful insects and diseases, but they also play an important role in the reproduction of those plants by attracting insects to pollinate them.
In water distillation, the plant material is submerged in water, brought to a boil and the vapour collected and liquified using a water-cooled condenser.
Steam distillation occurs when a jet of steam is passed through dry plant material in the still and the vapours are cooled using the same water-cooled condenser method.
Compression of the plant material to extract the oil from the plant. This is the most usual method of extraction for citrus oils.
This extraction method uses volatile solvents to dissolve the oils into. Especially used for more delicate raw materials that may be heat damaged by the distillation process. It is also a good way of creating a higher yield of oils such as jasmine and rose. Solvents used are hexane or alcohol.
This is where delicate fragrant flowers are collected early in the morning and placed onto a thin layer of vegetable fat or solid lard. The flowers are left for 24 – 48 hours and during this time the essential oil has moved out of the flower and into the fat.
The old flowers are replaced by new flowers until the fat is saturated with the fragrant essential oil. This is now called a Pomade and the essential oil is usually then extracted by solvent extraction to leave an absolute behind.
Under very high pressure and extremely low temperatures carbon dioxide liquifies, and when past through the raw materials acts as a solvent and dissolves the essential oil into it.
When the temperature and pressure returns to normal, the liquid CO2 reverts back to a gas and leaves the extract behind. These extracts have a larger amount of extracted plant materials including volatile or aromatic material, fatty acids, Phytosterols, and other important plant extracts.
The advantage of this method is that there is no contamination of the pure extract, no heat degradation and the most yield that the plant can give. It is however an expensive route as the machines are large and very expensive.
